SLOPES

There are three types of slopes that we come across during map reading and land navigation. They are as follows:

  • Convex Slope
  • Concave slope.
  • Uniform slope.

Concave Slope:Will be steeper at the top. The horizontal distance between contours decreases with the increase of height, steeper at the top of the slope.

Convex Slope: Steeper at the lower end. The horizontal distance between contours increases with the increase in height. Steeper at the bottom of the slope. This slope can be dangerous due to the steepness which could surprise the not alert walker on descending during bad visibility.

Uniform Slope: The horizontal distance between contours remains constant. If the horizontal distance between contours is zero the uniform slope is vertical. Uniform slopes are sometimes described as even slopes.
